THE NICENE CREED
I
Believe in one God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
and of all things visible and Invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.
God of God.
Light of Light. True God of true God. Begotten, not made, consubstantial
with the Father; By whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our
salvation came down from Heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of
the Virgin Mary; and was made man.
He
Was also crucified for us, suffered under Pontius Pilate and was buried.
And on the third day
He arose again according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven, and
sits at the right hand of The Father. And he shall come again with glory
to judge the living and the dead; and of his Kingdom there shall be no
end. And in the Holy Spirit, The Lord and Giver of Life Who proceeds From
the Father and the Son, Who together with the Father and the Son is adored
and glorified, Who spoke through the Prophets.
And in one,
Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission
of sins. And I look For the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the
world to come.
Amen.
NOTES:
The Nicene Creed
was adopted at the first of seven Christian General Councils ~ The
Council of Nicaea I circa AD 325, and was a formal statement of faith for
Christians. Attended by about 328 bishops and presided over by Bishop Hosius
and called for by Emperor Constantine I. It has been amended several times
at later General Councils.
The Apostles Creed,
very similar in statement, was a forerunner from what was called "The
Apostolic Council" at Jerusalem long before this one,(c.50 A.D.) and
while considered a "General Council" by many it was certainly
in a class by itself so is not usually listed as one of the Seven General
Council Meetings. It was presided over by James (The brother of Jesus)
who was the Bishop of Jerusalem and attended by Peter who argued successfully
for the admission of Gentiles into the Church.
